Learn Calligraphy The Easy Way! Fun Way! Cheap Way!

The art of stylistically writing with a marker.

Because we learned to put pen to paper. Because we resonate with a marker. Because we can afford to embrace our inner child.

Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.
— Pablo Picasso

After all, markers are the instruments responsible for forging our paths into the aspiring artists we once were & still are.

Nostalgia is enough to evoke the curiosity in creating really cool letters with a marker. Never mind the untraditional manner in doing so—calligraphy with a marker is far less intimidating than a brush pen. Plus, markers are cheap, easily accessible and most of all, fun!

Your interest might make you hastily search for a pen that you've seen skilled calligraphers use, tricking you into thinking that their pen could potentially make your learning experience easier. Perhaps you've asked the infamous “what pen is that?” question, only to have it unanswered and drown in a pool of hopelessness. While picking a marker out of a lineup full of prestigious pens may be simple—I've got some news for you:

The tools absolutely do not make the craftsman.

The work that you envy from the artists you love, have sacrificed thousands of hours of deliberate practice to be able to hone their craft and create beautiful pieces of art.

Now it’s time for you to showcase the skills you admire in your own unique style.

I want to help you get to that next level. I want to inspire you to be your best self. I want you to put in the effort that it takes to become as good—if not better—than your idol. I'll provide detailed material to reference and relatable experiences—the good and the bad—that I went through as a beginner, to help motivate and keep you on track to fulfilling your goals.I'll help you reach these goals.

Each week, I will cover a new topic on Crayligraphy for you to practice so you are equipped when transitioning to the next phase. The following are a few things that you can expect to learn:

  • Basic fundamentals of calligraphy and how to emulate brush strokes without the aid of a soft flexible tip.
  • Create letterforms utilizing cohesive techniques from writing and drawing to manipulate various styles of calligraphy and hand lettering.
  • Turn your work into silky smooth vectors using specific tools and applications.

What You Will Need To Begin

If you haven't already received my free Crayligraphy reference guide, be sure to sign up to my newsletter to be able to download, print and access the guide at any time. Feel free to use any kind of paper, really. I prefer using cardstock because markers are able to glide across a smooth surface better than a textured, or toothy paper. Also—as an added bonus—smooth paper preserves the life of the marker!

You Will Learn Crayligraphy If You apply Yourself

If you're a beginner, you won't master this skill-set overnight. But, learning calligraphy with a marker will be easier than any other pen. If you are intentional with your practice and show up everyday, you will improve sooner than expected.

Setting aside twenty minutes a day to practice diligently will translate into you becoming really good, really fast. Since markers are not brush pens, by default, they have a firmer nib with a subtle flex, allowing you to create thin lines and broad strokes with ease.

You will fail. You will get frustrated. But, don't let this deter you from practicing daily. If it's a challenge—sure, hesitate, but make sure you do it. Do it again. Do it several more times. Turn around, look back and laugh. I go days with unsatisfactory work, but I keep grinding and eventually, things just start to work out.

Prioritize practicing patience from the very beginning and you will get better.

So, tools don't make the craftsman? That's right. I'm honoring this phrase by showing you that it doesn't matter what fancy writing tools you use. I'll teach you to understand the rules and then break them responsibly. Join me in the journey to learning Crazy Calligraphy!
