WHY CRAYLIGRAPHY?

Let's be honest: we can all embrace our inner child every once in awhile and resonate with a Crayola marker. After all, Crayolas are one of the first markers we learn to color with. Nostalgia alone is enough to evoke the curiosity in creating really cool letters with a traditional instrument in an untraditional manner. Never mind the easier learning curve Crayligraphy offers compared to the intimidating brush pen.

CRAYOLA MARKERS ARE CHEAP, EASILY ACCESSIBLE AND MOST OF ALL, FUN!

As the interest of hand lettering and calligraphy continue to grow, you might be hastily searching for an instrument that you've seen skilled calligraphers use, tricking you into thinking that their pen could possibly make your learning experience less arduous. Perhaps you've asked the infamous “what pen is that?” question, only to have it unanswered and drown in a pool of hopeless aspirations. While picking a Crayola marker out of a lineup full of prestigious pens may be simple enough—I've got some news for you.

THE TOOLS ABSOLUTELY DO NOT MAKE THE CRAFTSMAN.

The work that you envy from the artists you love, have sacrificed thousands of hours of deliberate practice to be able to hone their craft and create beautiful pieces of art.

WELL NOW IT’S TIME FOR YOU TO SHOWCASE THESE SAME SKILLS YOU ADMIRE IN YOUR OWN UNIQUE STYLE.

I want to help you get to that next level. I want to inspire you to be your best self. I want you to put in the effort that it takes to become as good—if not better—than your idol. I'll provide detailed material to reference and relatable experiences—the good and the bad—that I went through as a beginner, to help motivate and keep you on track to fulfilling your goals. When you join me in this  crazy ride, I'll help you reach these goals.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT TO LEARN

Each week, I will cover a new topic on Crayligraphy for you to practice so you are equipped when transitioning to the next phase. The following are a few things that you can expect to learn:

  • Basic fundamentals of calligraphy and how to emulate brush strokes without the aid of a soft flexible tip.
  • Create letterforms utilizing cohesive techniques from writing and drawing to manipulate various styles of calligraphy and hand lettering.
  • Turn your work into silky smooth vectors using specific tools and applications.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO BEGIN

Calligraphy, Crayligraphy, Lettering, Hand Lettering

If you haven't already received my free Crayligraphy reference guide, be sure to sign up to my newsletter to be able to download, print and access the guide at any time. Feel free to use any kind of paper, really. I prefer using marker and cardstock because Crayolas are able to glide across a smooth surface better than a textured, or toothy paper. Also—as an added bonus—smooth paper preserves the life of the marker!

YOU WILL LEARN CRAYLIGRAPHY IF YOU APPLY YOURSELF

Crayligraphy is going to be difficult. If you're a beginner, you won't master this skill-set overnight, but I have some good news for all of you aspiring Crayligraphers out there. Learning calligraphy with a Crayola will be easier than learning from any other pen.

I'm consistently asked about pens I recommend for beginners. I always respond by referring them to a brush with a firmer tip.

THE LESS FLEX IN A BRUSH—THE MORE RESISTANCE BETWEEN THE TIP AND PAPER—THE BETTER CONTROL—THE EASIER TO WRITE.

For this reason, a Crayola marker will soon be your best friend and go-to resource when practicing calligraphy. Since Crayolas are not brush pens, by default, they have a firmer nib with a subtle flex, allowing you to create thin lines and broad strokes with ease.

So this is my promise to you. If you are intentional with your practice and show up everyday, you will improve immensely in a shorter amount of time. Setting aside twenty minutes a day to practice diligently will translate into you becoming really good, really fast.

You will fail. You will get frustrated. But, don't let this deter you from practicing daily. If it's a challenge—sure, hesitate—but make sure you do it. Do it again. Do it several more times. Turn around, look back and laugh. I go days with unsatisfactory work, but I keep grinding and eventually, things just start to work out.

PRIORITIZE PRACTICING PATIENCE FROM THE VERY BEGINNING AND YOU WILL PREVAIL.

So, tools don't make the craftsman? That's right. I'm honoring this phrase by showing you that it doesn't matter what fancy writing tools you use. I'll teach you to understand the rules and then break them responsibly. Join me in this journey to learn some Crazy Crayola Calligraphy!
